Picture this: a small village nestled in the northern mountains of Thailand, with coffee plantations stretching as far as the eye can see. This is Doi Chang, a place where the heart of enduro racing beats loudly. In the heart of the rainy season, I embarked on my first-ever enduro race at the 4th Doi Chang Enduro in October. It was a weekend filled with adventure, mud, and unforgettable experiences.
Setting the Stage
On a crisp Friday morning, we loaded up our pick-up truck with all the necessary gear and, of course, my trusty dirt bike. The destination was Doi Chang, where we had booked a cozy bungalow in a coffee factory that served as the race's pit area. This gave us the perfect opportunity to acclimate ourselves to the unique racing scene in Thailand and explore the stunning coffee plantations that surrounded us.
Meeting the Enduro Enthusiasts
Friday and Saturday provided us with the chance to connect with the event organizers and fellow riders, soaking in valuable information and tips. We even had time to visit the coffee plantations, adding a delicious twist to our pre-race experience.
Race Day: A Slick Challenge
On race day, the excitement was palpable, with 654 out of 709 registered riders lining up. But Mother Nature had other plans, as heavy rain shortened the originally planned 30-kilometer race to 21 kilometers. The race conditions were incredibly slick, and organizers warned us about the challenges we were about to face.
The journey to the starting line included a parade ride through the charming village. With onlookers capturing the procession on their cameras, the atmosphere was electric.
The Muddy Struggle
I kicked off my adventure by starting number 70, hoping the trails would still be in good shape. However, it didn't take long for the trails to transform into a slippery, muddy mess. The clay-like mud clung to our tires, making navigation almost impossible. Clearing the tires of clay required speed, a tricky feat on the steep mountainside terrain.
In about half an hour, we hit a hard enduro section, which was intimidating even without the mud. To my surprise, I managed to navigate it relatively smoothly. But as I pushed on, I encountered a series of tough hill climbs that tested my limits. The relentless rain only exacerbated the treacherous conditions. I had to wait for a break in the rain to gain enough traction to ascend. Falling multiple times, lifting my bike, and battling fatigue, I pushed through.
As I approached the fourth hill climb, I realized that I had run out of water, had not eaten for eight hours, and had no energy left in my body. Safety became a concern, and I decided to make the challenging decision to retreat.
The Tough Conditions
Only 165 out of the 654 riders who started the race managed to reach the finish line. The demanding conditions were evident, and it raised questions about the trail choices, especially during the rainy season. With only 25% of the riders finishing, it seems the organizers might have underestimated the difficulty of the course this year.
The Aftermath: A Learning Experience
Returning home, I watched videos from the race and learned valuable lessons about how to handle such obstacles in challenging conditions. While I hope not to encounter such extreme conditions again, I'm better prepared for future races.
Conclusion: An Unforgettable Experience
Overall, my Doi Chang Enduro 2023 experience was a memorable one. The Kamax KMX 250MT dirt bike stood strong in the face of adversity, proving its quality. With newfound knowledge and a growing passion for enduro racing, I look forward to my next race, hoping for slightly kinder conditions. Doi Chang Enduro tested my limits, and I emerged from the mud stronger and more determined than ever.
